These reins have been designed by Ernest Dillon FBHS one of the country’s top equestrian coaches with the knowledge gained from teaching thousands of pupils worldwide. These revolutionary reins manufactured by de Boiz have been cleverly designed to allow the rider to keep a clear and constant contact on the rein. One of the fundamentals of good riding is to keep the horse between hand and leg, constantly losing the contact and having to retake the rein whether schooling on the flat or jumping fences leads to a confusion for the horse and rider. The reins have an adjustable loop to prevent the rider's hand slipping and a consequent loss of contact.
Guidance for Use of the Ernest Dillon Correct Contact Rein
The correct contact rein can be used with any horse or any rider as a training aid. There is no "gadgetry" involved just a new approach to accepting the correct Length of rein and the contact you should feel on your horse’s mouth.
When the rein is adjusted for the first time it will feel much shorter than you have been previously comfortable with. This is as it should be.
Without leaning forward and with the horse's head carriage in the correct place for the stage he is at put your hands in the imaginary rein position. Elbows bent and hands above and a little in front of the withers.
Ask your trainer or friend to then adjust the rein so that you can hold the loop comfortably with your fingers.
With the correct contact rein there is no need to grip the rein, your fingers will just hook naturally around the loop thus eliminating tension in your whole arm.
Strong or leaning horses become hard to ride if the rider is gripping hard on the rein and so the muscles become tired and the rider ceases to ride effectively.
Now that you have the correct contact you can make full use of your legs without dropping the contact, the horse will become more active and so, eventually, work more efficiently through the back.
You may have to re-adjust the rein a little shorter to jump.
The reins are acceptable in all BSJA jumping Competitions and event showjumping.
The follow through with the rein over a jump will become natural and the rider will not have to make any effort to compensate for having the rein attached for jumping.
